Who doesn’t want a hassle-free, healthy, and filling breakfast? We all do. In fact, I crave one every morning. So I’m going to share with you one of my personal favourites from all my years of searching for the perfect guilt-free breakfast recipe (that doesn't include fancy inaccessible ingredients).

Before finally arriving at this recipe, I attempted to pair many different fruits and nuts together with rolled oats, which often resulted in inedible bowls of untouched oatmeal. Finally, after many failed attempts with combos, I found that walnut and apple complemented each other very well. The slight sweetness of the apple and the walnut’s gentle crunchiness provides two varying tastes and textures in a single bite. The health drink powder acts as a binder on the oats, all the while giving it a rich flavour and adding in those essential nutrients.

If you’re looking for other great flavour combinations to complement your oatmeal, scroll down to take a look at our taste-tested and personally recommended options! Most of them taste great with either honey or brown sugar as a sweetener. So try away! You never know what might just tickle your taste buds!

Walnut and Apple Oatmeal

Serves: 1 person

Prep time: 5 minutes

Nutrients: Carbs, fiber and protein

Ingredients :

  • 1 cup Quaker oats

  • 2 cups water

  • 2 tablespoons desired health drink (I recommend flavourless protein powder or Horlicks)

  • 3 teaspoons honey*

  • 1/2 of an apple

  • A pinch of cinnamon

  • A handful of walnuts

Instructions :

  1. Boil two cups of water in a dish.

  2. Add the rolled oats once the water begins to boil and allow them to soften.

  3. Continue to boil the oats on medium flame till they become thick and have soaked up all the water.

  4. Remove the dish from the stove and transfer it to a serving bowl

  5. Add your desired health drink powder and honey.

  6. Chop the apple into tiny pieces and add them to your oats.

  7. Add the walnuts and sprinkle the cinnamon on top.

Serve while it’s still hot!!! Enjoy your perfect breakfast bowl!!!

Notes :

  • Instead of honey you can use brown sugar

  • Alternative flavour combinations:

  1. Banana- nut (the classic oatmeal combo that never goes out of style)

  2. Blackberry- Mango pulp (a great summer feast)

  3. Chocolate- nut butter (a little on the indulgent side of healthy)

Feel free to change up the amount of sweetener as per your taste.
